Archival records are primary sources and created during the course of events or transactions for purposes integral to the transactions themselves. Since archival records are one-of-a-kind, they cannot be borrowed or leave the City of Regina Archives; they must be handled with care following certain procedures.

However, you can request copies of the desired records; contact the City of Regina Archives for more details.

Finding ancestral information

The City of Regina Archives contains many resources that can be helpful to genealogists, such as cemetery records for the City Cemetery and for Riverside Cemetery. These records include Cemetery location cards for both Riverside and Regina Cemeteries, including infants, soldiers and Masonic plots.

Archives also has early City of Regina Municipal Manuals (1912-1929), Tax and Assessment Rolls, Voters’ Lists and a unique City of Regina census dated 1906. As well, the Research Room has a nearly complete run of Henderson Directories for the City of Regina from 1908 to 1999.

Researching the history of a house

The City of Regina Archives has many resources available for researching the history of specific properties within the City of Regina. The best place to start is with the Henderson Directories. These directories provide listings of home and building occupants, spouse and occupation. These books are not always accurate, but it is possible to use these directories to get a rough idea of the occupants of the home, when the home was built and when or if the house was demolished or destroyed.

The City of Regina Archives also has Building Permit Registers. These are arranged chronologically, so it is best to have an idea when the house was built in order to look up the building permit in the registers.

The City of Regina Archives has a large collection of architectural drawings that can also be accessed. A staff member can assist you in determining if there are any blueprints or architectural drawings available for the property in question.

There are also a number of photographs of properties around Regina. Although the City of Regina Archives does not have a photograph of every property in the city, many photographs of prominent structures, streets and landmarks exist in the City of Regina Archives’ photograph collection.
