The City of Regina is please to be designated as a host community for an Olympic Torch Relay event. All of the activities are free of charge. Bring your fitness clothes, indoor runners, swim suit, skates, cross country skis, and join in the fun.

Sports Festival: 4:00 - 6:00p.m.

Olympic Torch Relay Presentation: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Community Event Overview

The City of Regina is pleased to be designated as a host community for an Olympic Torch Relay event, set to occur the afternoon and evening of Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Regina Sportplex. There are various components to this event including sports activities, a winter carnival, entertainment and food vendors.

Event Objectives

To create a sense of pride in our city, country and all citizens, in a celebration embracing inclusiveness and harmony – one that embodies the Olympic spirit through an event that highlights the various cultures, focusing on youth, families and the hopes, dreams and opportunities available to all.

RCMP

The City of Regina has extended an invitation to the RCMP to come and be part of the Torch Relay Event. Click here to learn more.

The RCMP Heritage Centre will be sending off the Olympic Torch the morning of Sunday, January 10, 2010. Click here to learn more.

Sporting Component

Various sports will display their sport at different venues. The sporting organizations will allow for interactive displays, autographs, direction and advice on how to become involved in the sport and how to play. Click here for more information.

5th Annual Ice & Fire Carnival

The inclusion of a winter carnival will feature Saskatchewan artists in an exhibition of sculpture and games of ice and snow. This magical outdoor art experience invites discovery and participation for the whole family. Click here for more information

Entertainment

On both the Main Stage and the secondary stage set up within the Fieldhouse, there will be cultural dances and entertainment from countries around the world. The dancers will display their talent, while dressed in colourful costume.

The opening act will feature Jason Plumb, who will generate a wave of enthusiasm and excitement prior to the arrival of the torch.

Round Dance

Prior to the official arrival of the Torch, all participants will be invited to participate in a Round Dance inside the Fieldhouse, to demonstrate inclusion of our community in this celebration.

Torch Procession

A colourful photo opportunity that is certain to be a highlight of our event.

Food Vendors

There will be various ethnic cuisine booths inside the Fieldhouse, allowing everyone to taste local cuisine.

Parking

Public parking ONLY available at Evraz Place. We encourage you to use the FREE transit services provided by the City of Regina.

Transit Services

Regina Transit will be providing free shuttle service to the Olympic Torch Relay events on Saturday, January 9th from Northgate, Southland, Victoria Square and Normanview Crossing malls. Buses, which will be identified as charter shuttles, will be leaving the malls at 3 and 4 p.m. and dropping passengers off at the Elphinstone Street entrance of the Regina Sportplex, 1717 Elphinstone Street.

Passengers can also be let off at the “World’s Longest Shinny Game” being held on Victoria Avenue between Broad Street and Albert Street. Buses will be located on the south side of Victoria Avenue for warm up and to transport players and spectators to the main stage at the Sportplex for the evening program.

3:00 & 3:10pm and 4:00 & 4:10pm pick up at:

(1) Normanview LandingElphinstone Street between 9th & 10th Avenue

(2) Southland Mall Albert Street (west side) between 9th & 10th Avenue

(3) Northgate Mall – Dewdney Avenue (north side) between Garnet & Montague streets

(4) Victoria Square MallAlbert Street (west side) between Dewdney & 9th Avenue

**Passengers will be dropped off at the Elphinstone Street entrance of the Fieldhouse.

Buses will be returning to the malls after the fireworks at approximately 8:15 p.m. from the Sportplex.

Transit shuttles will also be travelling at 15 minute intervals from the Sportplex to the sports venues at Cooperators Centre (indoor rink facility) and the Eventplex (indoor soccer facility) at Evraz Place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Fireworks

The event will conclude with an exciting 10 minute firework display.
