Roll out garbage carts

Garbage truck lifts rollout cart to empty itThe City of Regina is switching all homes without access to back alley garbage bins to automated front garbage collection using roll out carts.

Already 17,000 homes have switched to roll out garbage carts; the remaining 12,744 homes will be switched to automated front-garbage collection by June 2009.

Each address is assigned only 1 roll out garbage cart. So if you move, you cannot take the cart with you; it must remain at your old home.Roll out garbage cart

Look of the carts

The carts are approximately 112 cm tall, 71 cm wide and 76 cm deep.

The carts can hold 360 litres of material, which is plenty of room since the average Regina household produces about 272 litres of material a week.

Benefits of roll-out garbage carts

  • Convenience
Just roll the full cart to the curb on pickup morning and roll it back into your garage or yard in the evening. All pickups are on a fixed day of week system. View the 2009 solid waste collection map for more information.
  • Manoeuvrability
The carts are compact, making them easier to push and store.
  • No mess
You don’t have to worry about spilling, bursting or tearing plastic bags filled with garbage since you roll the cart to the curb. As well, the hard plastic cover on the cart prevents dogs and other animals from reaching the cart contents.
  • Ease of pickup
The City has trucks designed to pick up and unload the roll-out carts. A single operator can perform all functions, which saves money and time.

On garbage day

On garbage collection day, put the rollout bin at the curb before 7:30 a.m. All garbage must be bagged and the cart’s lid must be shut. Do not place excess garbage beside your cart as it will NOT be picked up. If you have excess garbage, you can either:

  1. store it so it can be picked up during the next collection period
  2. recycle any items such as paper, cans, unused paint or glass
  3. dispose of your garbage at the City of Regina landfill

To ensure your cart is in the right position for the garbage truck to pick it up and unload it:

  1. Back it in – put the wheels against the curb
  2. Point it out – face the arrow on top toward the middle of the street
  3. Give it room – allow at least 1 metre (about an arm’s length) on either side
