The Regina Fire & Protective Services Department is made up of approximately 303 professionals in five divisions. Suppression and Rescue personnel operate a four platoon, two shift rotation. On average, the Regina Fire & Protective Services Department responds to more than 9,000 calls for assistance per year.
How to Become a Firefighter
During the recruitment process, the Fire & Protective Services Department advertises current openings on Regina.ca, job boards like Saskjobs.ca, and emails the job posting to colleges in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba that offer Firefighter training.
To become a Firefighter, you first must take training that meets the standards set by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFASC).

Applicants must provide or meet a variety of verification requirements.
Applicants must provide verification of:
- Grade 12 diploma or GED equivalency.
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Certification for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level I and Level II.
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Certification and must possess a current practicing license in the Province of Saskatchewan. Copy of Saskatchewan license, current PCP 2011 NOCP, ITLS and CPR certifications.
- A criminal record check (current within 3 months of application).
- A valid driver’s license with air brake endorsement and a five-year driver’s abstract (current within 3 months of application). Class 3A is an asset.
- A York Firefighter Fitness Assessment Certificate (current within 6 months).
Applicants must meet vision and hearing requirements:
- Near vision acuity of 20/40 or better binocular, uncorrected or corrected.
- Far vision acuity of 20/40 or better binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles OR 20/100 or better binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles or new soft contact lens wearers, uncorrected.
- Far vision acuity of 20/100 in the worse eye, corrected or uncorrected.
- Normal colour vision (Ishihara & Farnsworth testing methods accepted) for use of equipment such as imaging devices.
*City of Regina Fire & Protective Services has adopted the 2022 NFPA 1582 candidate eyesight standard.
- Normal hearing test results (No more than 30 decibel hearing loss in either ear average at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz).
Regina Fire & Protective Services uses the York University Firefighter Applicant Fitness Assessment Protocol administered by the Centre for Health, Wellness and Performance - Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies staff at the University of Regina or Human Performance Center (HPC) staff at the University of Saskatchewan. Applicants are required to complete a series of tests including aerobic fitness, vision, colour blindness (Ishihara and Farnsworth testing conducted), hearing, lung function, swimming and 8 validated job-related performance tests.
Aerobic fitness is measured directly using expired air analysis while running on a treadmill. The speed and incline are gradually increased until the candidate reaches maximum intensity. This test is designed to measure endurance or "work capacity". Participation in moderate to high-intensity aerobic workouts (30 to 45 minutes per workout, 4 to 5 times per week) including activities such as jogging, cycling, swimming and rowing, can help you prepare for the aerobic fitness assessment.
The eight job-related performance tests are designed to simulate the physical demands of a firefighter's job which requires muscular strength, coordination and endurance. To prepare for these tests, you may wish to participate in supervised weight training, stretching and an aerobic exercise program to increase strength, improve flexibility and enhance aerobic fitness and capacity. The performance tests are:
- Ladder Climb (Acrophobia)
- Search Enclosed Area (Claustrophobia)
- Hose/Climb Carry
- Rope Pull
- Hose Advance/Drag
- Ladder Lift
- Victim Drag
- Forced Entry

Additional skills and abilities that candidates will require:
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, act quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Excellent physical condition.
- Personal health habits that develop and maintain resiliency.
- Ability to observe, identify and communicate about mental health matters.
- Willingness to participate in mental health sessions and counseling for the development and maintenance of positive and resilient mental health.

Step 2: Testing
Our hiring process involves a series of tests. As you pass each test, you progress to the next test. Those who fail a test are removed from the process but are encouraged to re-apply for future vacancies.
Written Knowledge Exam: You must take an exam containing a random selection of multiple-choice questions based on the NFPA 1001 Level II Standard.
Step 3: Interview & Reference Checks
Candidates who are successful in the testing phase will be interviewed and reference checks will be completed.
