Roll Out Garbage Carts
The City of Regina is replacing all shared back alley garbage containers with individual rollout carts. We have been using shared back alley garbage containers for about 25 years, but the service is becoming obsolete. Now that the City’s garbage trucks and containers are due for replacement, the City is moving in a more modern direction.
Switching to individual rollout carts will improve service by giving each household its own dedicated container, reducing overflow in shared containers and making garbage collection more efficient.
By the end of the spring of 2013, all single-family households will have individual garbage carts, and the shared back alley containers will be removed.
This change impacts close to 26,000 homes.
Residents who will be changed to the new rollout cart system will receive a letter and brochure in the weeks before the cart is delivered to notify them about the change and to advise them about their new weekly garbage collection date.
Residents are asked to start using the rollout carts on their fixed garbage collection days as soon as the carts arrive and to stop using the alley container. All alley containers will be removed after the carts are delivered.
Switching to individual garbage carts is one of the first steps in the City’s new waste plan for a greener Regina.
Benefits of rollout garbage carts
-
Convenience Just roll the full cart to the curb on pickup morning and roll it back into your garage or yard in the evening. All pickups are on a fixed day of week system. View the 2009 solid waste collection map for more information.
-
Manoeuvrability The carts are compact, making them easier to push and store.
-
No mess You don’t have to worry about spilling, bursting or tearing plastic bags filled with garbage since you roll the cart to the curb. As well, the hard plastic cover on the cart prevents dogs and other animals from reaching the cart contents.
-
Ease of pickup The City has trucks designed to pick up and unload the roll-out carts. A single operator can perform all functions, which saves money and time.
-
Size The carts are approximately 112 cm tall, 71 cm wide and 76 cm deep. The carts can hold 360 litres of material, which is plenty of room since the average Regina household produces about 272 litres of material a week.
