A New Waste Plan for a Greener Regina
Since 2008, the City of Regina has been conducting research and consulting the public on waste management strategies. Now, we have developed a new plan for a clean, sustainable Regina.
Here is an update on our new curbside recycling program and other changes in our waste management services.

How we got here
The City manages and operates garbage collection, landfill and recycling services for Regina. Waste Plan Regina was developed as a result of growing public interest in reducing waste in light of our City’s rapid expansion. At the time, the plan recommended a review of the City’s garbage and recycling services and a proposal for future options. Now, City Council has approved a renewed waste plan to improve our system, sustain our environment and benefit our community for generations to come.
The new waste plan targets include:

Background
Waste Plan Regina started in the spring of 2008 to review garbage and recycling services. The review was initiated due to increased public interest to reduce waste and the City’s unprecedented rate of growth. These factors, along with others, created the need to develop a new plan to provide continued guidance for the growth of the City’s recycling, garbage and waste services.
The City began a review of industry best practices and consulted stakeholder groups and the community. An extensive list of options was compiled and three service options were developed (Current Plus, Enhanced and Comprehensive). Further consultations on the three options revealed the majority of respondents preferred the enhanced option.
City Council approved adopting the enhanced option at their meeting on March 22, 2010. The Administration will bring back a report towards the end of 2010 with more details on an implementation plan.
