History of Watershed Stewardship Award
In 2006, Regina’s City Council approved the establishment of the Watershed Stewardship Award. This $1,000 award is presented annually to an urban country dweller, agricultural producer, conservation/environmental organization, or other group whose project, upstream of Regina, has had a positive impact on the Wascana Creek watershed.
2007 Watershed Stewardship Award Recipient
The $1,000 prize for the 2007 Watershed Stewardship Award was presented to Ducks Unlimited Canada for its project - McKell Wascana Conservation Park.
The goal of the project, which began in 2004, is to conserve some of the last existing native grassland within Regina, while promoting and educating both urban and rural residents about nature, habitat stewardship and the importance of wetlands and wetland ecosystems.
The park is located in the southeast part of the city, along the Wascana Creek between Highway 33 to the east and Fleet Street to the west in the Wascana Estates subdivision.
The park includes over 30 hectares acres of natural habitat within the city and nearly 39 hectares adjacent to city limits. Much of the land was donated to the project by Bob McKell, whose family has farmed in the area since the 1880s.
