City Seeks Input on Community Character Share What Makes Cathedral and Lakeview Unique
The City of Regina invites residents to help define the character of the Cathedral and Lakeview neighbourhoods.
These neighbourhoods contain a high concentration of designated heritage properties and other unique characteristics that add to sense of place within Regina. This character also contributes to social and economic vitality. Consultation is underway to determine how the unique features of these neighbourhoods can be protected and enhanced through heritage conservation tools.
“Community character refers to the qualities that make an area an attractive place to live, work and invest. It is the result of many elements including location, landscapes, views, architectural features and heritage assets,” says Diana Hawryluk, Executive Director, City Planning & Community Development. “We’re inviting residents of Cathedral, Lakeview and other neighbourhoods to help create a definition for this ‘character’ and help protect it.”
Interested residents can participate in several ways:
- Add to the Photo Story Project – Visit ca/character and add a pin on the Photo Story Map along with a brief description and/or photo of what makes that location special.
- Join the Online Workshops – On November 30 (Cathedral) and December 2 (Lakeview), participants will consider the data collected through the Photo Story Project to develop statements that define character and where this character is evident. Each neighbourhood will also hold workshops in January to review character-supporting regulatory tools. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to register.
- Subscribe for updates on Be Heard Regina to participate in other future activities related to the project.
After consultation, a set of recommendations will go to City Council that clarify heritage and character conservation objectives, rationale and expectations in the Cathedral and Lakeview neighbourhoods. Wallace Insights has been contracted to study regulatory options and lead this public engagement. Input received will also inform updates to the Cathedral and Lakeview Neighbourhood Plans.
