Frequently Asked Questions

View the most commonly asked questions and answers about parks and open space.

When will you empty the garbage cans in the park?
During summer months (May to September), Parks has a weekly schedule to visit each park, athletic field, ball diamond and empty garbage cans. Higher traffic locations are visited more often.

When will you clean up litter in the parks?
Parks cleans litter in parks, along roadsides and in City-owned open space areas. Some businesses are responsible for the landscaping in the right of way along the road and therefore it is their responsibility to clean the litter. The City does not clean litter on private property.

During summer months (May to September), the parks department has a weekly schedule to visit each park, athletic field, ball diamond and pick up litter. Higher traffic locations are visited more often.

When will you clean up the litter on the Ring Road and around the city?
We clean up large debris weekly along the Ring Road over the winter. In spring as soon as areas are dry and safe to enter we will clean the litter. Please be patient with us! It took five months for all this litter to accumulate and it will take us some time to clean it all up.

If you are interested in cleaning litter as a one-time event or on an ongoing basis, check out our Adopt A Greenspace program. We need folks like you to lead the way in keeping our city clean!

The grass in the park/open space is overgrown... can it be cut?
Our guideline is to mow most irrigated parks once per week. Parks that are mowed once per week are string trimmed every two weeks. Some unirrigated parks are mowed once every two weeks or once per month.

Other open space areas vary in frequency - once per month; three times per year; two times per year; one time per year. These frequencies are guidelines. For example:

  • Some locations are mowed once per month, this could mean it is mowed every four to six weeks, weather permitting.
  • If it has rained substantially, or we have had an equipment breakdown, we may have missed a day (or two) of mowing which has delayed our park mowing schedule.

When will you mow the overgrown grass in the utility parcel (easement)?
Utility parcels are cut approximately three times per year. If your easement has not been cut it is usually because there is watering ponding and we do not want to make the ponding worse by making ruts while mowing. Utility parcels have been designed to hold water over a specified area to help keep the water contained within the parcel until it has evaporated. Within a week or two of heavy rainfall the area should dry up. Homeowners may feel free to string trim or push mow the area if it is feasible. Areas will be mowed when they are dry enough for the equipment.

The grass isn’t really growing, why are you mowing it
As some areas get drier, or in the fall as the grass slows down we are selective in our mowing and do not mow everything. Sometimes the grass is not growing but the weeds are still growing which make the area look messy so it will still be mowed.

In the fall, leaves are removed or mulched with a mower for the health of the turf. If the leaves are left on the turf they can create a layer that blocks water, nutrients, air and sunlight. They can also invite pests and diseases. When leaves are mulched, rather than removed, the smaller leaf pieces decompose and provide some additional nutrients to the soil to help support turf growth.

My house backs a park/open space area and I need to have materials delivered, may I have vehicle access through the park?
Yes, generally homeowner/contractors will be allowed vehicle access as long as conditions permit and the access is limited. Please contact Service Regina at 306-777-7000 at least 48 hours in advance. You will be contacted to meet on site and complete a Parks Access Form with the details and agreement that you will be responsible for damage in the park.
