Traffic restriction extended for McCarthy Boulevard

September 23, 2011

Construction on McCarthy Boulevard from Mikkelson Drive to 1st Avenue North will be extended by two weeks. The City is now planning to be finished by the end of October.

The McCarthy Boulevard rehabilitation is a very unique and challenging project. In the past, the City has needed to repair McCarthy Boulevard annually because the road heaves so much. The City attempted an innovative solution to prevent heaving over the road's lifespan: using shredded scrap tires as a lightweight filler underneath the road. The City has not used this material before, and it has not been performing exactly as expected. The City has reverted back to traditional road construction methods to ensure the construction is completed in a timely manner.

There are several parties involved in the construction project, including the City, a consultant and a contractor.

The City apologizes for the delay and appreciates residents' patience as we work to complete the construction.

For everyone's safety, drivers are reminded to slow down in construction zones and consider alternate routes to avoid construction. City workers and their families are relying on you.
