Regina Transit and SGI offer free transit service on New Year's Eve

December 4, 2013

Regina Transit and SGI are partnering to offer free transit and paratransit service for residents on New Year’s Eve with the 26th annual Ding in the New Year. The free bus service will run from 7 p.m. on December 31 to 2:15 a.m. on January 1.

"Ding in the New Year is here to offer residents a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve and a safe start to 2014,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “New Year’s Eve is a time of hope, of new starts and of evaluating who we are and who we want to be. If you drink, resolve not to drive. Please always plan a safe ride home.”

“Every year SGI is proud to continue our support for Ding in the New Year,” said Minister responsible for SGI Donna Harpauer. “Alcohol is among the top contributing factors in fatal collisions in Saskatchewan. We want to make sure everyone gets home safely on New Year’s Eve and this is one way we can help them plan a safe ride home.”

“There really is no excuse for drinking and driving,” said Regina Police Chief Troy Hagen. “It’s such an unnecessary risk with severe consequence to yourself and others. With Ding in the New Year’s free transit service, there’s yet another option when planning a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve.”

Regina Transit offers options for residents to plan their routes on New Year’s Eve and all year round. Residents are encouraged to visit to see bus routes near their locations and to watch their buses getting closer. Residents can use on their computers or smartphones. Residents can call the Ride Line at 306-777-RIDE for more information. The Ride Line will be open until 2:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

SGI is providing extra incentive with a prize draw. Ding in the New Year transit users can share a photo of themselves riding the bus on SGI's Facebook page or tweet it to @SGItweets with the #dinginthenewyear and #yqr hashtags to be entered in a draw for a $100 gift card and a free bus pass.

Ding in the New Year is provided by the City of Regina, SGI and long-time sponsors Z99, JACK FM, NewsTalk 980, the Leader Post, CTV and Printwest.

On behalf of Regina Transit, SGI, and Regina Police Service have a happy and responsible New Year.
