Chemical Spill or Cloud
The accidental spill of hazardous material can threaten peoples’ lives within the spill area since many deadly chemicals cannot be seen or smelled.
Prepare for a chemical spill or cloud
- Prepare your survival kit and emergency food and water kit.
- Talk to your family about what everyone should do if a chemical spill occurs.
- Know how to turn off all sources that move air inside your home (e.g., air conditioner, dryer vents, furnace)
Stay safe during a chemical spill or cloud
If you are at home:
- Turn on your radio or television and listen for updates and instructions.
- Do not go outside where you may come into contact with the spill/cloud.
- Follow these tips if you are asked to Shelter in Place.
- If you are told to evacuate, leave your home at once.
If you are at work or in a public building:
- Follow these tips if you are asked to Shelter in Place.
- Listen to your battery-operated radio for updates and instructions.
- If you are told to evacuate, leave the building at once.
If you are outside:
- Seek shelter in a large, public building as soon as possible.
- If you cannot get inside, move upwind of the spill or cloud.
- Do not go near the accident area and keep others away from the area until emergency crews arrive.
If you are driving:
- Drive upwind of the spill or cloud.
- Do not go near the accident area.
- Avoid driving on roads that emergency crews will use to approach the spill site.
After a chemical spill or cloud
- Listen to local radio and television stations for updates and instructions.
- Return to (or leave) your home only when officials tell you it is safe to do so.
- Only use the telephone if necessary. Emergency crews may need all available lines.
- If you or someone else is injured, seek medical help.
