Reducing Emissions at the City
Since 1990, the City of Regina has been looking for ways to reduce its energy use within its operations, thereby reducing its impact on the climate. As a result, the City as a corporation has reduced its emissions by 5% through a series of internal operational improvements, including:
- converting streetlights to high pressure sodium vapour
- converting vehicle fleet from gasoline to compressed natural gas
- improving the efficiency of the water supply system
- improving the efficiency of the sewage treatment plant
- changing building lighting to energy efficient alternatives
- improving building heating and ventilation systems
- investing in energy efficient retrofits in 6 major facilities
- purchasing Hybrid vehicles
Emissions Reduction Targets
Regina's City Council joins with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in endorsing the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol establishes greenhouse gas emission reduction targets designed to encourage action to slow down the effects of climate change.
