Private Planting in Public Open Space
The City permits individuals or groups, following approval, to plant trees or shrubs on public space at their own cost and maintenance.
To apply
If you would like to plant trees or shrubs on City property, you are required to submit a written request with a plan drawing (to scale) to the Project Services and Landscape Design. Staff will review the plans to ensure the design complies with set-back requirements and that there are no conflicts with future plans.
Your proposed planting design should meet the following guidelines:
- The City will not be responsible for any costs associated with the installation of the trees.
- Watering and maintenance will be your responsibility.
- To reduce mortality rates, your tree must have a diameter of 40 mm for deciduous trees or be 1.2 m height if you are planting coniferous trees.
- All underground utilities must be located prior to any digging.
- The following spacing and setbacks must be maintained according to the guidelines set out in the Regina Urban Forest Management Strategy (RUFMS) .
- You cannot plant a tree in drainage ditches and swales or on dikes without the additional review and approval from Engineering and Works.
- You cannot plant your private tree within a pipeline corridor due to the hazards it creates.
- Your plan’s layout design shall be harmonious with the context of the site (e.g. buffer or park space) and should not give the perception of being an extension of your private space.
