Protect the Environment

Taking Regina Transit to and from work can help save the environment. The energy used by a passenger taking transit over 40 years is equal to the energy used by an automobile driver in just 4 years.

As well, the Canadian Urban Transit Association estimates that for every kilometre a passenger travels on public transit will create 65% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when compared to that person travelling alone in a personal vehicle. By shifting travel from automobile to public transit, Canada could see a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The report National Vision for Urban Transit to 2020, commissioned by Transport Canada , states that public transit has numerous benefits to the environment other than GHG emissions reductions. These other benefits include:

  • A reduced need for new road construction
  • Improved air quality due to less vehicles on the road
  • Reduced traffic congestion
  • Healthier downtowns
  • Improved social mobility
  • Positive impacts on economic sectors such as tourism and export development
