Characteristics
Height and Spread Smooth Sumac can grow up to 4.5 metres in height and may have a crown width of 3 to 4 metres. This tree aggressively suckers.

Preferred growing conditions Grows well in full sun or partially shaded sites. Can withstand drought; however, plant adjusts its height to the amount of water it is receiving.
Form Smooth Sumac branches grow out from its center, creating a loose, open look with a flat ‘top’ which resembles an umbrella.
Flower/seeds Greenish flowers clusters over 20 cm in length appear
Leaf Smooth Sumac leaves consist of 9 to 12 leaflets that are smooth, elliptical and up to 12 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width. In the summer, the leaves are dark green; in the fall and winter, the leaves turn to red.
Bark/wood Bark is brown.
Berries Clusters of hairy red berries with pits in their centers appear in the fall.
Pruning Prune to keep shape.
