Sumac, Staghorn
Characteristics
Height and Spread Staghorn Sumac can quickly grow up to 4.5 metres in height and may have a crown width of 3 to 6 metres.

Preferred growing conditions Grows well in full sun or partially shaded sites. Can withstand a bit of drought.
Form Staghorn Sumac have the appearance of velvety antler horns, which is where they got their name. Branches extend out and give the shrub a flattened appearance.
Flower/seeds Greenish-yellow leaves cluster together in dense, hairy 15 to 30 cm panicles.
Leaf Staghorn Sumac leaves consist of 11 to 27 leaflets. Each medium green leaflet is 5 to 10 cm long and 3 cm wide. Leaves turn orange or red in the fall.
Bark/wood Bark is velvety brown and hairy when new, but matures into a rough, dark bark.
Berries A fleshy red or crimson berry with a hairy skin and pit in the centre.
Pruning Prune to keep shape.

Stem dieback appears if shrub freezes back over winter.
