Rechargeable battery recycling (K-3)

Topic/Length:
- Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) 30-40 mins.
Objectives:
- To introduce highlights from the RBRC program and basic concepts.

- personal & social values stressing environmental concerns, such as sustainability of the ecosystem/environment
Prerequisite Student Learnings:
- some basic social values
- protection of the natural environment
- public collection of waste
Methods/Strategies:
- Set: 5 mins. Introduce basic concepts of the RBRC program. Define terms and basic principles of the RBRC.

- Ask for anecdotes from students (what do you do with your cell phone batteries, what happens when batteries are put into the landfill.)
- Development: Talk about the information that is communicated in the presentation.

- 10 mins. Discuss the RBRC program, interaction and feedback. Students can investigate the reasons behind RBRC, what happens to the batteries, who is Guy Lafleur. Use of toy cell phones and RBRC boxes.
- Puppet-Show Presentation: 10 mins. Presentation provided by Street Culture Project.
- Closure: 5-10 mins. Review RBRC program concepts and refer to the information that is available.
