Pesticide-Free Parks

The City has designated three of its parks as pesticide-free in 2011.  They include Gordon Park in southwest Regina, Al Pickard Park in north Regina and Queen Elizabeth II Court in front of City Hall. The City’s Parks & Open Space Department is committed to reducing the overall use of pesticides and is in the process of developing a proposed pesticide-use reduction plan with the intention of significantly reducing reliance on herbicides over the next three to five years. As part of a pilot project, three parks in Regina have been designated as pesticide-free for 2010.

  1. Gordon Park, 3509 Gordon Road
  2. Al Pickard Park, 343N Pickard Street
  3. Queen Elizabeth II Court, City Hall, 2476 Victoria Avenue

This project will determine the applicability of this approach to other parks in the future. The maintenance program will include keeping the grass irrigated, fertilized and aerated resulting in a healthy stand of turf that can resist invasion by weeds. Weeds in shrub beds will continue to be controlled by rototilling and/or hand hoeing/pulling. In the unlikely event of a pest infestation that cannot be controlled using an alternate means, the option exists to use pesticides as a last resort to ensure that health, safety or economic value is not compromised.
