Avoid sewer backups and costly repairs Only flush the 3P’s
There is never a good time for sewage to back up into your home. The City is urging residents to avoid flushing anything down their toilets except the 3P’s - pee, poo and paper (toilet) – especially during this time of increased public health concern.
The City is seeing an increase in the number of clogs from the use of alternative products such as “flushable” wipes, paper towels and tissues that do not break down like toilet paper.
The City’s sewer system is built to handle human waste and toilet paper that is specifically designed to deteriorate quickly. Anything else put down your toilet or sink causes problems that lead to clogs, blockages and wastewater equipment damage which can result in costly repairs.
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) poured down the sink, harden and line the sewer walls. Then wipes, paper towels and hygiene products collect together with the grease to form ‘fat bergs’ which can block your toilet, home sewer line or the City’s sewer system for an entire neighbourhood. These clogs can also result in overflows of raw sewage into local rivers and lakes.
Raw sewage can back-up into your home and your neighbours’ homes – likely requiring you to evacuate your house for professional cleaning. Large blockages require City staff to clear them.
