Organic Mosquito Control Program Now Underway
Regina residents know that the best way to enjoy a hot summer day is to spend time outdoors with family and friends - and sometimes, a few mosquitos tag along.
The City of Regina is beginning its environmentally-friendly, preventative control program to keep the blood suckers at bay so you can make the most out of the season.
The City is sampling and treating bodies of water in and around the city where mosquito larvae can be found before they become a problem. City crews apply an organic product called Vectobac™ directly to bodies of water like ponds, ditches or large puddles. Vectobac™ is approved for use by Health Canada and is safe for birds and aquatic life, but it kills mosquito larvae within 24 hours.
The City has also started weekly monitoring of adult mosquitos, using 12 traps set up across Regina. Results of the count are made public at Regina.ca/mosquito and will be updated weekly.
We take bugs seriously, and so should you. It takes just a cup of water to breed hundreds of mosquitoes. Help reduce the mosquito population by removing any standing water in your yard.
