Rochdale Retention Pond Maintenance and Cleaning
Starting this week, crews will clean, inspect and evaluate the condition of the two large culvert inlets located at the north and west sections of the Rochdale Boulevard retention pond.
Starting on Monday, January 4, crews will replace the culvert on the south side of the pond that caused a washout this past summer. While the pond is drained, the City is taking the opportunity to proactively clean the pond to remove (dredge) sediment buildup and prevent future issues.
Residents may notice an unpleasant odour around the pond beginning in January, while cleaning takes place. There may be a slight odour as the pond fills naturally in the spring with melted snow and rain.
This dredging takes place through winter because frozen ground makes it easier and minimizes the impact on the surrounding area. Dredging helps to improve the functionality, condition and water quality of the pond, resulting in fewer algae blooms during summer months.
For everyone’s safety, we ask for your cooperation by staying out of the work areas.
