Statement from Mayor Sandra Masters regarding the tragic discovery at a former residential school in British Columbia
"I am deeply troubled by the discovery of the remains of 215 children at the site of a former residential school in British Columbia.
The outpouring of shock and grief across the country reminds us all of the tragic legacy of the residential school system.
I recognize that this discovery elicits profound pain and sadness for many in our community, and I extend my condolences to all those in mourning.
The flags at City Hall have been lowered, and will remain lowered for 215 hours, to honour the 215 children whose lives were lost, their families, their communities, and all those who never made it home.
We must all remain committed to learning the truth of our shared history, to seeking opportunities for reconciliation, and to the vigilance required to prevent these tragedies from recurring." - Mayor Sandra Masters
