Stay off the ice
As we celebrate the New Year with family and friends enjoying the wonderful weather, residents should stay away from all bodies of water, including Wascana Lake and creek, storm channels and detention ponds.
Throughout the winter season, do not walk, ski, skate or play on any body of water. Parents and guardians are asked to take a few moments to talk with children about this important safety rule.
Regina Fire & Protective Services reminds residents not to build ice rinks on any storm channels or detention ponds in residential neighbourhoods. Ice conditions on ponds can change quickly and without warning, creating an extreme hidden hazard.
It is also suggested dogs are kept on leashes when close to bodies of water. If a pet breaks through the ice, do not attempt to rescue it as you will be putting yourself in serious danger.
If you see anyone, particularly children, close to thin ice, call Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500.
In an emergency involving people or pets, call 9-1-1.
