This Bike Safety Week, Show Us How You Cycle Safely Enter our Social Media Contest to Win Great Prizes

The City of Regina, in conjunction with SGI and Bike Regina, is reminding cyclists and drivers to wear, share and be aware when out on city roads this spring.

May 15–20, 2022 is Bike Safety Week in Saskatchewan for the 20^th year in a row. It’s a great time to emphasize the importance of safe cycling for everyone who shares our streets.

Cycling is a great form of active transportation and recreation for everyone. It’s also an activity that requires safe behaviours to reduce the risk of injury.

Here are some tips for safe cycling:

Wear a properly fitted, CSA-approved helmet.
Ride with the traffic, not against the traffic.
Obey all traffic signals and signs – just like when driving or walking.
Use arm signals for turning or changing lanes.
Install reflectors, bells and headlights, and wear high-visibility clothing.
Bicycles with tires 16 inches and smaller are welcome to use the sidewalk.

To keep cycling as safe as possible, it’s important for drivers and bike riders to share the road. As a driver, remember to:

Scan the street in front of you and check your mirrors often to avoid being surprised by a bike in your path.

Wait until it is safe to pass a cyclist. Some cyclists will move into the turning lane to allow you to go by, but if that lane is unavailable drivers need to be patient, even during rush hour.
Keep a safe distance behind cyclists when you're waiting to move past them.
At night, drive with caution and watch for neon clothing, reflectors and lights.
