Winnipeg Street Overpass Demolition
The Winnipeg Street Overpass project is progressing and will require major closures and restrictions. These traffic measures are being put in place for the demolition of the existing overpass and to keep motorists and workers safe. Signage will be in place to notify drivers of all traffic detours.
On Thursday, September 8, at 6 a.m. the eastbound Ring Road exit ramp to Winnipeg Street will be closed for paving of the new lanes for approximately 24 hours. Eastbound Ring Road traffic wanting to access Winnipeg Street will be detoured to McDonald Street.
Starting Friday, September 9 at 9 p.m., to Monday, September 12 at 6 a.m., the demolition of the existing overpass will begin with the following restrictions and detours: See attached Map A.
- Ring Road traffic in both directions will be detoured using the existing off-ramps and newly constructed on-ramps to Ring Road.
- Winnipeg Street will be closed over Ring Road. Drivers needing to use Winnipeg Street to access businesses and activities will experience significant detours and should plan ahead.
- Alternative routes to cross Ring Road include McDonald Street or Broad Street.
- 9th Avenue North will be closed to through-traffic at the tracks as crews complete paving on this section of road.
The new overpass will be open to traffic on Monday, September 12 with most of these restrictions removed. Eastbound Ring Road traffic, however, will be unable to turn left onto northbound Winnipeg Street and will be detoured for the next four to six weeks while the new exit loop ramp is completed. See attached Map B.
The City will advise residents of changes to this schedule and future restrictions as work progresses.
We thank residents for their understanding and patience. Slow down, plan ahead and be safe. Workers and their families are relying on you.
