Mary Bonnie Baker
On August 6, 2015, the City of Regina, supported by funding from the Government of Canada, unveiled a commemorative garden, obelisk and art mural in honour of the legendary baseball player Mary ‘Bonnie’ Baker.
The formal unveiling marked the Pan American Games debut of Women's Baseball, which was added to the program at the 2013 Pan American Sports Organization's general assembly. Additionally, this inclusion in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan American Games was significant as it was the first time Women’s Baseball was included in a major international multisport competition.
City and Provincial officials, as well as members of the Baker family and the public, attended the event which took place in Central Park; the place where everything began for Mary. The mural was created under the leadership of Carly Jaye Smith.
This ceremony marked the conclusion of a month-long community celebration across the country in recognition of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. The event also included a softball clinic for young female athletes in partnership with YWCA Big Sisters of Regina, Go Girls! - an organization dedicated to fostering leadership in young girls.
