Car Kits

You should carry an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stranded.

To create an emergency kit for your vehicle, gather the following items and store them in a duffel bag or backpack in the trunk until needed:

  • Axe or hatchet
  • Blanket (The metallic ‘survival’ blanket is best)
  • Booster cables
  • Candle (survival candle to heat water or provide emergency light)
  • Compass
  • Extra clothing and footwear
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Flashlight
  • Food and bottled water (e.g., energy bars, packaged crackers, nuts)
  • Ice scraper and brush
  • Matches
  • Methyl hydrate (for windshield de-icing and fuel line)
  • Paper towels or cloths
  • Plastic garbage bag (for an instant rain poncho)
  • Road flares or warning light
  • Road maps
  • Sand, salt or kitty litter
  • Shovel
  • Tin can (to hold candle, heat water for a drink)
  • Tow chain
