William E. Mason opened a branch of the Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation in Regina in 1905. Fifteen years later he became manager of the W.E. Mason Discount Company and the Prudential Trust Company. Mason was a member of City Council for five years in the early 1920s and was Mayor from 1925 to 1926.
Following the 1912 Tornado, he was active in raising public funds for the reconstruction of the Metropolitan Methodist Church and the YMCA. When he concluded his term as Regina's first magistrate, he was a member of the board of trustees for the city's sinking fund, in which office he was commended as a most patient man who always kept calm under stress.
