In 1882, Daniel Mowat was the first merchant to open a store on Regina's newly surveyed townsite, conducting business in a tent with goods he brought from Broadview by ponies and carts. He and his brother built a store on Broad Street and soon had a thriving business. Dan Mowat was a member of Regina town council in 1885, and served as Mayor from 1886 to 1887. In 1891, he was elected to the North West Assembly for Regina North.
