If watering and caring for your lawn becomes too much, consider xeriscaping your yard.
To water your lawn:
- Provide 2 to 3 cm of water every 7 to 10 days to grow healthy lawns with deep roots. Overwatering can lead to thatch build-up.
- Measure how much water your lawn is getting by placing a flat pan under the sprinkler. When the water measures 2 to 3 cm, stop watering!
- Adjust your sprinkler to avoid watering driveways and sidewalks.
- Water in the morning or evening when there is less wind and heat which robs valuable moisture.
- Water in 20 minute increments over one morning or evening if your soil has a lot of clay. This practice reduces the chance of water runoff and allows moisture to penetrate deeply into the soil.
