Q&A: Utility Rates

Does a new plant mean a huge increase in utility bills to pay for the project?
The increases we’ve seen in utility bills during the past few years have been designed to help keep the current sewage treatment plant operational and to help offset construction costs required to build the new plant. We can continue to expect some rate increases but at the current pace with the P3 Council approved.

Isn’t the utility bill rate hike we saw in January just a way to make way for a P3?
A portion of the nine per cent utility rate increases have been designated to fund investment in the upgraded sewage treatment plant. The P3 Council approved offers the best value of all the options evaluated.

Won’t the private sector be able to determine our utility rates in both models presented?
The City will remain solely responsible for determining utility rates.
