Storm Sewer System

In the City of Regina, storm runoff is collected by approximately 850 km of underground storm sewers which drain into Wascana Creek and Pilot Butte Creek.

First, runoff enters the storm sewer by flowing into the catch basins located along the sides of streets.

Storm sewers are connected to storm channels which lead water into Wascana Creek, or sometimes connect directly to Wascana Creek or Pilot Butte Creek.

To protect neighbourhoods, some areas have a dry bottom storm detention pond that temporarily stores water after a large rain storm. Storm detention lakes provide a 'cushioning' effect for nearby storm sewers after such storms.

Dikes are built along some portions of Wascana Creek to protect low-lying areas from a flood event on the creek.
