Tree Seedling Giveaway Returns June 4
For the sixth year in a row, Regina has earned international recognition as a Tree City of the World — an honour that highlights our ongoing commitment to urban forestry. To celebrate this milestone and acknowledge Arbor Day, residents are invited to attend a tree seedling giveaway in Victoria Park.
On Wednesday, June 4, 1,000 trees will be given away in Victoria Park between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., while supplies last. The tree seedling being given away this year is Adam’s Elderberry. Seedlings will be limited to one per person, given away on a first come, first served basis.
Tree giveaway events in past years have been very popular. Residents are encouraged to watch for an additional giveaway in September for National Tree Day.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Arbor Foundation recognizes Tree Cities of the World, which meet core standards on the care and planning of urban trees and forests. The program's vision is to connect cities worldwide to a network dedicated to sharing and adopting the most successful approaches to managing city trees and forests.
Regina was one of the original 68 Tree Cities of the World when the program began. The program has expanded to 210 cities including 21 communities recognized in Canada.
Regina has more than 500,000 public and private trees that were hand planted to establish an urban forest within the original prairie landscape. This quantity removes the C02 equivalent of 3,330 mid-sized vehicles from the atmosphere each year. Trees also help with flood control and natural cooling of urbanized areas, including buildings. Our urban forest supports our goal of becoming a 100 per cent renewable city by 2050.
