Henry Baker Scholarship Program

The City awards scholarships to students that excel in their studies and also make a difference in their community. In addition to supporting exceptional student achievement and recognizing the importance of our educational institutions, the program supports Council’s vision of providing opportunities for young people in our community.

Scholarships

The City of Regina awards 17 scholarships annually to students attending post-secondary educational institutions in Regina through the Henry Baker Scholarship Program.

University of Regina - Including Campion College and Luther College

  • One $2,000 entrance scholarship for a student graduating from a Regina high school enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in the first year of a degree program at the University of Regina.
  • Two $2,000 scholarships for a student enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in the second year of a degree program at the University of Regina.
  • Two $2,000 scholarships for a student enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in the third or fourth year of a degree program at the University of Regina.
  • Two $2,000 scholarships for a post-graduate student enrolled full-time [minimum 6 credit hours] in a Masters or PhD program at the University of Regina; with a thesis relating to a community issue.

 First Nations University of Canada - Regina Campus

  • One $2,000 entrance scholarship for a student of Indigenous ancestry graduating from a Regina high school enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in the first year of a degree program at the First Nations University of Canada, Regina Campus.
  • Two $2,000 scholarships for a student of Indigenous ancestry enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in a second, third or fourth year degree program at the First Nations University of Canada, Regina Campus.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic - Regina Campus

  • Two $2,000 entrance scholarships for a student graduating from a Regina high school enrolled full time in the first year of a diploma or degree program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina Campus.
  • One $2,000 scholarship for a student enrolled full time in the second, third or fourth year of a diploma or degree program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina Campus.

Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (including Dumont Technical Institute), & Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies - Regina Campus

  • One $2,000 entrance scholarship for a student of Indigenous ancestry graduating from a Regina high school enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in the first year of a degree or diploma program at Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (including Dumont Technical Institute), Regina Campus, or Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Regina Campus.
  • One $2,000 scholarship for a student of Indigenous ancestry enrolled full time [minimum 9 credit hours] in a second, third or fourth year degree or diploma program at Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (including Dumont Technical Institute), Regina Campus, or Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Regina Campus.

Registered Vocational Schools in Regina - The Style Academy, Western College of Remedial Massage Therapies, Marvel Beauty School, The Globe Theatre Conservatory, Avant-Garde College, Apex Academy of Professional Grooming & Animal Arts

  • Two $2,000 scholarships for a student enrolled in a 20 week or more certificate program at a Registered Category I Vocational School located in Regina.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be registered full-time for the upcoming fall semester at the University of Regina (including Campion College and Luther College), First Nations University of Canada, Regina Campus, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina Campus, Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (including Dumont Technical Institute), Regina Campus, Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Regina Campus or a Registered Vocational School by the application deadline on June 1. Failure to do so will deem the submission ineligible.

  • University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada applicants graduating from a Regina High School must have a minimum Early Conditional Admission Average (ECAA) of 80 per cent (based on the 5 subject grades used to calculate ECAA).
  • University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada undergraduate applicants must have a UGPA of 80 per cent.
  • University of Regina post-graduate applicants must have a CGPA of 80 per cent in their graduate studies. (In some circumstances, a portion of the undergraduate marks will be used).
  • Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina Campus must have a minimum overall average of 70 per cent.
  • Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (including Dumont Technical Institute), Regina Campus, or Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Regina Campus, applicants must have a minimum overall average of 70 per cent.
  • Vocational school applicants must be enrolled in a minimum 20 week certificate program to one of the listed Category I Registered Vocational schools (The Style Academy, Marvel Beauty School, The Globe Theatre Conservatory, Avant-Garde College, Western College of Remedial Massage Therapies Inc., or Apex Academy of Professional Grooming and Animal Arts) in order to be considered for a Vocational School Scholarship.
  • All applicants must reside in Regina and attend a Regina educational institution.
  • Previous winners of a Henry Baker Scholarship and City of Regina full-time employees are not eligible to apply.

Application Process & Deadline

There are three simple steps to apply for a scholarship.

1. Indicate the one scholarship category you are applying for

  • Applicants who are registered under the Saskatchewan Collaborative Programs in Nursing between the University of Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic are required to submit their application through one of the four respective scholarships allocated to the University of Regina as part of the Henry Baker Scholarship Program.

 2. Attach a copy of your official or unofficial transcript(s)

  • High School Graduates: Please attach your most recent transcript. High school students can obtain a transcript from their high school or an official transcript from Student & Teacher Services.
  • Post-Graduate, second, third, and fourth year students: Please attach a copy of all your post-secondary transcripts. Post-secondary students can obtain transcripts through the University of Regina or Saskatchewan Polytechnic. 

 3. Attach a Word/PDF document that details the following information in separate paragraphs, no more than two pages in length:

  • Community involvement, volunteerism and personal or family life experiences;
  • Academic and career objectives; and
  • Why financial support would assist you.
  • Post-graduate students must also describe how their thesis or graduate studies (for course-based students) relate to a community issue. Failure to include all of these pieces will result in being deemed ineligible.

Reference letters are not required and will not be considered.

June 1, 2022

The City of Regina commits to providing a response to all applicants by September 1 of the current year. The official notification will be provided via original mail, unless otherwise communicated by the City of Regina.

Some terms and conditions do apply.

  • The City of Regina reserves the right to reallocate funding to another category, if no eligible candidate is identified.
  • If there is no eligible applicant within an Indigenous scholarship category (i.e., FNUniv, GDI and SIIT), the Review Committee can recommend a self-declaring individual in another educational institution category.
  • The City of Regina Henry Baker Scholarship Program is subject to change without notice.
  • Previous winners of a Henry Baker Scholarship and City of Regina full-time employees are not eligible to apply.
  • The Selection Committee reserves the right to conduct a personal interview and request year-end marks for high school students.
  • Scholarship winners’ names and photos will be used in print and media material.
  • The City of Regina may contact the educational institutions to confirm applicant enrollment for the upcoming Fall semester in the current year.
  • The City of Regina may share application information within the City of Regina organization.

In addition to academic success, the City’s Henry Baker Scholarship Program (HBS) focuses on volunteer work that a student does within their school and community. Helping others is a trademark of these committed students who have received this year’s scholarship.

Congratulations to the 2021 Henry Baker Scholarship recipients! 

Bronwyn Heerspink

Bronwyn Heerspink is enrolled in her third year, working towards a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, majoring in Political Science. Following the completion of her undergraduate degree, she is planning on pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy. Since entering university, she has committed many hours to the International Studies Students Association, holding three positions within the organization: Events-Coordinator, Vice-President, and President. 

Ray Heerspink

Ray Heerspink graduated from Miller High School in 2021. While there he was the school’s representative to STRIVE (Student Trustee Representative Initiative for Voice and Engagement), speaking at meetings about school spirit and activities, as well as the handling of COVID-19. He also was heavily involved with student council, as the Environmental Representative, tasked with running the Recycling Club as well as encouraging environmentally friendly choices to students and staff. He hopes to receive a Bachelor of Engineering as this is a huge passion of his. 

Victoria Stroeder

Victoria Stroeder is entering her second year working towards a Bachelor of Music, majoring in Voice. Her primary goal is to become a high school or university choir teacher. After her first degree, she expects to return to university to pursue a graduate degree in Musical Performance. Victoria plays several instruments, including alto saxophone, pipe organ, and piano. In 2019 she sang with the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association Honour Choir and is currently a member of the Halcyon Chamber Choir. A large part of her community involvement also revolves around church activities. 

Ella Forrest

Ella Forrest graduated from Miller High School in June 2021. She is currently enrolled as a pre-optometry student working towards a Bachelor of Science. In Grade 10, she and a few friends created a youth choir called ‘Illuminate’ at their church. During the pandemic, the choir has reach out to a nationwide community, giving virtual performances to care homes across the country. Ella has volunteered many hours, performing close to 20 concerts in the first few months of the initiative.

Jessica Madiratta

Jessica Madiratta is working on completing a Doctorate in Philosophy. As part of her school’s Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Advisory Committee she co-facilitated a community of practice within her school division called North Central Achievement. She co-facilitates a community of practice called ‘Deepening an Understanding of Reconciliation’, and also co-facilitates an anti-racism group called ‘Sequoia’.

Jessica is exploring community issues in her proposed research to identify ways to best serve students through culturally responsive education. Her research project provides educators with the opportunity to participate in an online professional development group on culturally responsive pedagogy.  

Jessica Stroeder

Jessica Stroeder is entering her second year of Music Education studies. She was a long-time member of her high school’s wind band, concert choir, chamber choir, and jazz band. She also volunteered with her school’s music department by accompanying choral pieces and by setting up the band room for daily rehearsals and concerts.

Outside of school, Jessica was also involved in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets at #34 Roland J. Groome Squadron for over four years, where she attained the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class.

Kwaku Ayisi

Kwaku Ayisi plans to complete a Master’s in Public Policy and then go into a PHD program. In addition to his own studies, Kwaku has volunteered many hours tutoring high school students at the Regina Open Door Society. He has mentored students from Afghanistan, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Syria, Pakistan, and Nigeria - helping newcomers access and utilize academic and professional resources here in Regina. His thesis focuses on ways First Nations people can improve quality of life for their children and families.

Christina Pappas

Christina Pappas is going into her second year of study in Dental Hygiene. Her academic and career goal is to eventually become a dentist. Christina enjoys volunteering, especially when she helped coach her high school’s special education cheerleading team. She also has volunteered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Saskatchewan Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured and Cecilian Chamber Series.

Rachel Krakauer

Rachel Krakauer is presently completing her PhD in Clinical Psychology. In June 2020, she founded the Psychology Graduate Students’ Association Anti-Racism Speaker Series, which highlighted the moral and ethical responsibilities to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour in our community. Rachel has designed her master’s thesis to meet the needs of our community, to better support the mental health of individuals who experience significant stressors such as psychological trauma.

Mark Kress

Mark Kress is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Education, working towards a major in History and a minor in Biology. He plans to achieve his degree by the end of Fall 2023.  Mark has been a board member of the Lakeview Community Association since moving into the area in 2016. He chairs the Lakeview Park Revitalization Project, where they are actively updating and adding unique features for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to safely gather, play, and enjoy Lakeview Park all-year round.

Maegan Krajewski

Maegan Krajewski is completing her thesis, majoring in Social Studies. She also is employed as the Community Garden Coordinator for the North Central Community Association. Over the past five years, this role has immensely shaped her understanding and awareness of food issues and how this affects members of our community. Maegan designs and participates in research projects that are community-based and tangible in outcomes.

Kathryn Derenisky

Kathryn Derenisky is currently enrolled in her third year of the U of R’s Secondary Education program. She is majoring in Social Studies Education and minoring in English Education. Kathryn enjoys volunteering her time with ‘Best Buddies’ having been the Co-President of the chapter since April 2019. She also volunteers with Astonished! which offers the ‘Providing Alternative Tomorrows with Hope’ program. This program is designed to aide individual student researchers experiencing a disability to work towards their individual goals.

Emily Lints

Emily Lints plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, majoring in English in 2022. From there she plans to pursue graduate studies in English or in publishing. Emily has been involved in our community as the Co-President of the English Students Association. To bring students together this year, the Association planned movie nights, game nights, and other social events like the yearly ‘Trash Talkin’ Conference’. She also volunteers her time with Enactus Regina, Girl Guides of Canada, and is an Ambassador in the U of R’s Student Success program.

Caralyn Engbers

Caralyn Engbers graduated from Regina Christian School in June 2021 with the intent to pursue a Bachelor of Science here in Regina. Caralyn has helped our community during the COVID-19 pandemic by starting a program called ‘Books for Community Schools.’ This program collected over $14,000 worth of books to be donated to elementary students located in inner-city Regina and the Standing Buffalo Reserve. She has also supported the community by sewing and donating over 100 masks. Caralyn also supports her church by operating an online, livestream of church services, enabling those who are unable to attend in person to remain connected. 

Hayden Sies

Hayden Sies completed his first year of post-secondary studies at the University of Regina and will be transitioning to Saskatchewan Polytechnic this fall. While in high school Hayden attended Balfour Collegiate. He continually was involved in his school community by taking photos at basketball and wrestling tournaments and participating in Balfour’s annual photography competition. His photos have been used for the school’s website as well as its yearbook. A highlight for Hayden was being selected to represent Balfour in the Regina Public School ‘Teen Talks’.

Nicole Dieter

Nicole Dieter just completed her first year of Mental Health & Wellness studies, followed by her first practicum at the Ignite Adult Learning Center. This establishment helps at-risk adults achieve their G.E.D. and provide training for their driver’s license. The Centre also helps build skills of at-risk adults to prepare them for the work world. Nicole is also a proud mother of two children.

Sarah Caldwell

Sarah Caldwell’s career objective is to be a Mental Health worker within Treaty 4 territory. Her ideal career would focus on helping youth. She started volunteering with Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network almost 10 years ago. Her involvement led to working with at-risk youth. Sara also enjoys going to retreats, facilitating workshops, and preparing and donating holiday meals.
