Cat & Dog Licences

Purchase an annual pet licence for your cat or dog to help ensure your furry family member is returned safely if it becomes lost or is found running loose.

New!

Licences are now available for purchase or renewal with our online portal.

To renew your licence:

  1. Visit our portal to create an account. After your account is created, stop and complete step 2.
  2. Email licences@regina.ca to let us know you created a profile. Be sure to include your licence number, name and contact information.
    • City staff will link your information in the system and let you know when this is complete.
  3. Once your information is linked, you can then renew your licence.

To apply for a new licence:

  1. Visit our portal, select the type of licence you require and create a new profile.
  2. Follow the online prompts to submit your application.
  3. Pay the required fees.

What’s on this page?

Dogs are required to wear their licence tags at all times. Cats that have either a microchip or legible tattoo are not required to wear their licence tags. Cats must wear their licence tags if they have no form of permanent identification, or if they have tattoos that are no longer legible.

    Licence Fees

Pet licences may be purchased and renewed in person at City Hall or by using the overnight deposit slot for payment by cheque or phone at 306-777-7717 (credit card required).

The annual cost of an animal licence is $20 for a cat and $25 for a dog if they are:

    • Sterilized (spayed/neutered)
    • A puppy/kitten (under 6 months of age)
    • A show dog/cat (copy of entry form & receipt required)

The annual licence fee for a cat or dog is $100 if they do not meet any of the above conditions. Replacement tags are available at the cost of $5.

You are required to renew your licence annually and to keep your licence updated when you move and/or your pet is given away, lost, stolen or is deceased.

Government-issued Photo ID: We now require a government-issued photo ID for all new and renewal licence applications. This measure is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure a secure and streamlined process for all applicants.

    Unlicensed & Stray Animals

Stray animals are captured by Animal Protection Officers and taken to the Regina Humane Society. If your pet is licensed and can be identified, the Humane Society will contact you within 24 hours. If your pet is unlicensed, you can call the Humane Society and provide them with a description of your pet in case it is picked up.

    Fines

To retrieve your pet from the Humane Society, you must pay the following:

    • $35 impoundment fee (+ $15/day after 3 days)
    • between $100 and $300 fine for running at large
    • between $150 and $350 fine if unlicensed

If your pet does not have a licence, you will also have to pay for it to be licensed.

Animals not claimed within 3 days may be put up for adoption or humanely euthanized.

    Benefits of Licensing

Licensing your pet helps to identify and protect your pet in case it becomes lost. Even indoor pets can get out and become lost. A pet licence is not only a requirement, but it provides the following benefits:

    • A licence tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray.
    • Licences enable Animal Protection Officers to return your missing pet to you as soon as possible.
    • With a licence, you are eligible for one “Get Out of Jail Free” redemption for sterilized animals.
    • Animal licensing is an essential part of animal care and control in our community. Licence fees support animal control services, animal impoundment services and administrative and educational services.
