City of Regina Celebrates Fire Prevention Week
The City of Regina is celebrating Fire Prevention Week from October 8 – 14, 2023. Started by the National Fire Protection Association in 1922, Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which caused devastating damage to life and property. Now, 101 years later, the week aims to share important fire safety information with residents of all ages.
This year’s theme, “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention”, focuses on the most frequent cause of fires and fire injury - cooking. Regina Fire & Protective Services reminds residents of some simple steps to stay safe while cooking:
- Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
- Watch what you heat. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Have a "kid-free zone" of at least one metre around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
“Cooking is the biggest cause of fires in our community, and it’s something we all do every day,” said Fire Chief Layne Jackson. “This year, Fire Prevention Week reminds us that preventing cooking fires is everyone’s responsibility. Adults can take some simple steps, like staying in the kitchen while cooking on the stove. Kids can help by keeping a safe distance away from cooking. Remember, cooking safety starts with you.”
