City of Regina and Partners Celebrate Successful Bid on Canada 55+ Games
The City of Regina, the Regina Hotels Association and Tourism Saskatchewan are celebrating a successful bid to host the 2028 Canada 55+ Games. After a competitive national selection process, the event will return to Regina August 21 to August 24, 2028. The event promotes active living, participation and healthy lifestyles for Canadians aged 55 and over. The Canada 55+ Games will bring participants from every province and territory together in a celebration of sport, camaraderie and community.
“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support the 2028 Canada 55+ Senior Games being hosted in the city of Regina,” Minister Responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan Alana Ross said. “This national event brings participants from across Canada together to celebrate active living, sport and community connection. It is also a wonderful opportunity to showcase Regina’s outstanding hosting capabilities and highlight Saskatchewan as a welcoming destination for visitors.”
The first Canada 55+ Games, held in 1996, were hosted in Regina. More than 530 participants took part in the Games that year. The governing body, Canada Senior Games Association, expects 2,000 participants at the 2028 event. Over the past 32 years, the games have attracted many competitors and community interest.
“Regina is thrilled to welcome the Canada 55+ Games back home in 2028,” said Mayor Chad Bachynski. “Our city has a long and proud history with these Games, and we’re excited to once again showcase the spirit, energy and hospitality that define our community. This event celebrates active living, connection and the joy of coming together - and Regina is ready to cheer on every participant as they make new memories here in our city.”
Funding support for the Canada 55+ Games is being provided by the Regina Hotel Association, the City of Regina and Tourism Saskatchewan. Through this coordinated effort, the City of Regina is ready to host this event.
“Regina is proud to be selected as the host city for the 2028 Canada 55+ Games,” said Sandra Jackle, President & CEO of the Regina Hotel Association. “Having hosted the very first national Canada 55+ Games in 1996, it is especially meaningful for our community to welcome the Games back to where it all began. We look forward to hosting participants from across Canada and delivering the exceptional hospitality experience our city is known for.”
Each national competition includes 15 mandatory events and six optional events to be determined by the local organizing committee.
"The inaugural 1996 Canada 55+ Games are being repeated in Regina,” said Larry Hesterman, president of the Canada 55+ Games organizing committee. "We are inviting all who are celebrating your 55th year, whether it be for the 10th, 20th, 30th or 40th time to join us in our beautiful Queen City during August 21 to 24, 2028 to celebrate, compete and above all have fun! See you at the Games!"
