Regina to Host Can-Am Police-Fire Games in 2028

September 27, 2024
Share:

Regina will host the Can-Am Police-Fire Games in August 2028, following a successful bid in a competitive selection process. This multi-sport, Olympic-style event will welcome thousands of athletes and their families from across North America for an exciting display of athleticism, skill, and camaraderie.

“The City of Regina is thrilled to have been selected to host the 2028 Can-Am Police-Fire Games,” said Regina Mayor Sandra Masters. “Our community holds a deep appreciation for the service and dedication of first responders, whose daily efforts keep us safe, supported, and protected. We celebrate the opportunity for these heroes from across North America to come together in the spirit of competition and connection, and we will ensure that every athlete, family member, and fan visiting our city has an exceptional and welcoming experience.”

The Can-Am Police-Fire Games celebrates the dedication and expertise of those who serve and protect their communities. Competitors will include professionals from Fire and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, Border Patrol, Corrections Officers, and other first responders.

“We are very excited to announce that Regina has been selected to host the 2028 Can-Am Police-Fire Games. The City of Regina has a long history of hosting various sporting events, which is exactly what we were looking for since our event is a multi-sport event,” said Bill Merryless, CEO of the Can-Am Police-Fire Games. “We also know that our competitors will feel at home with the wonderful volunteers and the rest of the community while we are here. Our First Responders keep our communities safe and what a great week it will be with First Responders here from all over the world!”

The Games will be held across various locations throughout Regina, to make the Games accessible to a broad audience and to highlight different venues in the city. Participants and spectators can look forward to an engaging visit as they explore the city’s diverse neighbourhoods and facilities.

The lineup of events promises to be thrilling, and spectators can expect to see angling, cross-country running, cycling, and competitive shooting (both pistol and rifle). Additionally, the Games will showcase the grueling challenges of the Toughest Competitor Alive and Toughest Firefighter Alive competitions, highlighting the incredible athleticism and determination of participants.

“The 2028 Can-Am Police-Fire Games is more than just an exciting event to showcase our province and capital city,” Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Paul Merriman said. "It’s an opportunity for our many officers in protective services, policing, corrections, fire and rescue to shine as they compete with their colleges from across North America. I’m proud of the work these officers do every day, and I know they will make Saskatchewan proud in the games.”

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to host the 2028 Can-Am Police-Fire Games in the city of Regina,” said Minister Responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan Jeremy Harrison. “The event will showcase Saskatchewan’s world class hospitality on an international scale and provide economic benefits to the local community.  Saskatchewan has a strong reputation of hosting successful sporting events on both a national and international stage, reflecting our province’s growing tourism sector."

Regina was selected as the host city after a competitive selection process, driven by the Regina Bid Committee. The Bid Committee was comprised of multiple Regina-based organizations, including Tourism Regina, City of Regina, Regina Police Service, Regina Fire & Protective Services, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Ministry of Corrections, Policing & Public Safety, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Saskatchewan Marshals Service, Tourism Saskatchewan, and Regina Hotel Association.

“We’re excited to showcase our exceptional firefighters in the Regina Can-Am Police-Fire Games in 2028,” said Fire Chief Layne Jackson. “This is a great opportunity for athletes from the emergency and protective services in Regina to enjoy camaraderie, fitness, and friendly competition.”

“The games are an incredible opportunity for front-line emergency personnel to showcase the unique physical aspects of their work while engaging in friendly competition with their counterparts from across North America,” explained Chief Farooq Sheikh of the Regina Police Service. “It’s all about family, fun and spending time with the larger community of first responders and I know our officers are looking forward to it.”
