Intersections are a key focus area for improving roadway safety in Regina. The City has implemented upgrades at key intersections to reduce the risk of collisions, enhance usability for pedestrians, and ensure the infrastructure functions effectively. Some of the upgrades implemented include:
- Leading pedestrian intervals - Allow pedestrians to enter a crosswalk three to seven seconds before vehicles receive a green light. This helps pedestrians establish their presence in the crosswalk before vehicles are permitted to turn.
- Pedestrian corridors – Designated crossing locations for pedestrians that include features such as overhead lighting, signage, and push-button activation to alert oncoming traffic.
- PedApp - A tool designed to make crosswalks safer and more accessible for visually impaired individuals by using a mobile application that automatically announces intersections as users approach. Additional locations will be added over time as part of a phased expansion.
