School zones are busy areas with high traffic volumes and the most vulnerable road users; children during the morning and afternoon school peak hours. Vision Zero aims to improve safety in these zones and create a safer environment for children traveling to and from school.
School zone assessments are conducted in collaboration with the Pedestrian Traffic and Safety Committee to identify and implement needed improvements. The Traffic Engineering team, within the Vision Zero Framework, is also completing the following:
- All schools:
- Enhanced pedestrian crosswalks with zebra crossings that are updated every year based on the pavement marking program.
- At joint-use schools in Regina:
- Adding school badge pavement markings.
- School zone LED flashing signs.
- Pole mounted driver feedback signs.
- At high-risk schools where drivers don’t comply with the school zone speed limit, in-road median flexible signs will be installed to provide visual warnings of pedestrian crosswalks for drivers.
