The speedometer backpack is a traffic calming awareness tool that was first developed and implemented in Quebec. The technology includes a backpack with a built-in speed feedback display. It provides live feedback on vehicle speeds as they travel past a separate speed radar and is effective in creating public awareness around safe speeds in school zones. The use of speedometer backpacks also provides an opportunity for an interactive/collaborative environment between the students, drivers, and community stakeholders
