Funding for Businesses and Multi-family Properties to Start Recycling and Compost Service
Condos, apartments and businesses can still apply for funding to implement recycling and composting services. Over half a million dollars is currently available through the City’s Early Adopter Incentive Program.
The program makes it easier for multi-family properties and businesses to prepare for future recycling and composting requirements. Eligible applicants can get reimbursed for a variety of equipment and materials including compost and recycling bins, bathroom hand dryers, signage, etc. The funding is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
"With this much funding still available, it’s the ideal time for eligible organizations to invest in recycling and composting systems," said Carolyn Kalim, Director of Water, Waste and Environment. "The funding can offset both capital and operational costs to help make the transition more affordable."
Recycling and composting services are not currently mandatory for multi-unit residential properties and businesses. However, that will change when updates to The Waste Management Bylaw come into effect in 2027 and 2028:
- Multi-family properties will be required to implement a compost service by July 1, 2027.
- Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) businesses will be required to implement multi-stream waste management systems (including recycling and compost) by January 1, 2028.
