Sewer Renewal Projects Set to Begin
Starting on Tuesday, June 27, the City of Regina will begin one of four sewer relining projects this summer in Regina’s south end. Sewer renewal extends the life of the pipe for another 50 years and is a cost-effective way to renew underground infrastructure without digging up our roads, which saves money and time, and reduces impact to residents and businesses.
The first relining project is a pipe in Regina’s south end that provides sewer service to almost 3000 properties, homes, and businesses. Work will take place along south Albert Street, Gordon Road and Rae Street and is expected to take about three weeks to complete, pending weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Crews will install the temporary bypass overnight on June 27 and June 28, which will provide uninterrupted service to all properties. Traffic will be detoured in the night during the ramp installations. Once this is complete, traffic along the Albert Street Service Roads just north of Gordon Road, Gordon Road just east of Albert Street, and Rae Street just north of Westfield Drive will see various lane closures and speed reductions for the next three weeks while the bypass is in place. The bypass pipe will run along Rae Street from Westfield Drive to Sunset Drive. Two-way traffic will always be maintained. See attached map.
A temporary wastewater bypass system will be operating throughout the day and night to ensure area residents can still flush their toilets, have a shower and do laundry without interruption throughout the project. The system is powered by generators that must run 24-hours a day. Nearby residents may hear them running over the next three weeks.
All efforts will be made to mitigate noise between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. During the curing process, residents may experience a slight chemical smell. This is not hazardous and should dissipate quickly.
Three more sewer lining projects are set to take place later this summer:
- Location 1 – Broadway Avenue from Winnipeg Street to Broad Street – Mid-July
- Location 2 – 17th Avenue from Francis Street to Winnipeg Street – August
- Location 3 – South channel from Rae Street to Lakeview Avenue – September/October
More details will be provided about the projects before they begin. Area residents and businesses will receive letters outlining the projects and any impacts.
