Pathways

Regina’s multi-use pathways are great for cycling, walking, running, skateboarding and rollerblading. Experience the beauty for yourself by using the many pathways that criss-cross Regina.

Pathways that promote walking, cycling and other modes of active transportation are important to improve health, safety, sustainability, affordability and neighbourhood connection across the city. These pathways include Regina’s extensive multi-use pathway network, as well as our ever-growing on-street cycling network.

Whether you are commuting to school or work, running errands, exploring a pathway for recreation, active transportation is a reliable, fun and low-cost way to travel through the city.

To ensure everyone who uses our pathways has a safe, enjoyable experience, please review the following pathway guidelines before heading out:

  • Bikers should signal audibly when passing slower traffic and pass on the left
  • Pedestrians and slower traffic, keep to the right when others are passing
  • Only electric recreational vehicles are permitted on the pathways, such as electric-assisted bicycles or wheelchairs. Power on-demand electric or gas bicycles are not allowed on pathways
  • Be considerate to other pathway users
  • Be a responsible pet owner; keep your pet on-leash, maintain control and clean up after your pet

Multi-use Pathway

The City's interactive map of our multi-use pathway system is colour coded to indicate which pathways are paved and cleared in the winter, and which are gravel and not cleared of snow:

  • green lines represent pathways that are paved
  • gold lines represent pathways that are not paved

Safety Guidelines for the Multi-Use Pathway

  • Pedestrians and slower traffic, keep to the right
  • Always pass on the left and give slower traffic a friendly warning before you pass, either audibly or with a bell
  • The speed limit of e-scooters on pathways is 15 km/hr
  • The recommended speed limit of all other non-pedestrian traffic is 20 km/hr
  • The only motorized vehicles permitted on the pathways are electrified active transportation options like electric mobility devices

Understanding the Network

Different types of streets, lanes and pathways are designed for different street conditions and different user needs, ensuring our roadways remain safe and comfortable for everyone.

  • Multi-Use Pathways: Off-street, paved or gravel trails shared by cyclists, walkers, runners and other active transportation users.
  • Shared Roadways: Wider road lanes shared by active transportation users, motorists and parked vehicles.
  • Bicycle-Only Lanes: Marked lanes on the roadway reserved exclusively for cyclists and e-scooter users.
  • Advisory Lanes: Narrow central travel lanes are meant to be shared by all road users, where motorists must yield to active transportation users.

this system is great for adding cycling lanes to streets (image of street with a cycling lane where they wouldn't otherwise fit.

An animated image of a single-lane street with a bike lane to the right-hand side appears.

Narrow roads with low volume traffic and low speeds. Here's how they work.

Image of street speed sign with low maximum km/h pops up over the graphic of the road and disappears.

Traffic from both sides share one central lane.

Illustrated image of single-lane street appears as though you are looking down on it from above.

Cycling lanes are placed on each side of the road.

Images of cycling lanes appear on both sides of the single-lane road.

When there are two drivers traveling in opposite directions,

Two vehicles appear on the road, travelling in opposite directions towards one another in the center lane.

the vehicles move into the cycling lanes to pass each other safely.

The vehicles shift to the side so that they are in the cycling lanes.

What happens if there's a bike in the cycling lane?

The image quickly disappears and reappears with a cyclist riding in the right-hand cycling lane.

Whoever is in front has the right of way.

The image rotates to give a side profile of a person on a bicycle with a car following behind them and a red arrow pointing to the cyclist indicating they are in front and have the right-of-way.

Vehicles travel behind the bike

Image reverts back to a cyclist riding in the right-hand cycling lane, with a car following close behind.

but can then move back into the center lane

A car travelling in the opposite direction comes down the center lane and passes the cyclist and car in the right-hand bike lane.

when it is safe to do so.

Once the car in the center lane has passed, the car following the cyclist moves into the center lane to pass the cyclist. The image fades out.

It is a whole new way for drivers and cyclists to share the road

An animated image of tire, comprised half of a car tire and half of a bike tire appears with a green checkmark beside it. Image fades to a blue screen.
