It's Emergency Preparedness Week
Be Prepared. Know your Risks.
May 3 to 9 is Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada. The national theme – Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. – reminds residents of the importance of understanding the risks in our city and taking action to prepare yourself and your family for an emergency.
To support community preparedness, the City has promoted its local emergency alert system, notifynow, over the last month and will send a test alert to subscribers the morning of Tuesday, May 5.
“To be prepared for an emergency, it’s important to get an emergency kit and make a plan for every member of your family,” said Fire Chief Layne Jackson. “Knowing the risks in your area is another critical step in being prepared. We know that our community can sometimes face extreme weather. Considering this when you prepare will mean you and your family are safer in the event of an emergency.”
Regina Fire & Protective Services reminds residents to:
- Know the risks – knowing the risks that are specific to Regina (e.g. extreme cold, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes) can help residents be prepared in the event of utility outages.
- Make a plan – having a plan prepared for you and your family will save you time if you need to act quickly during an emergency. Learn how to develop a family emergency plan at getprepared.ca
- Get an emergency kit – It is recommended to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours during an emergency event. To help ensure your kit is easy to carry, think about the members of your family, including pets, when you purchase one or put one together.
- Sign up for notifynow - receive emergency alerts in case of an unexpected event in the city. Visit Regina.ca/NotifyNow and register for notifynow.
