Rare Wollemi Pine Finds a New Home in Regina
The City of Regina welcomed a Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) to the Regina Floral Conservatory. Donated by the City of Edmonton, the rare tree will become a permanent part of the Conservatory’s collection.
“We’re grateful to the City of Edmonton for giving Regina the opportunity to care for this remarkable tree,” said Russell Eirich, Director, Parks & Open Space Services. “The Wollemi Pine was once thought to be extinct, so having one here in Regina is something special. It gives residents an opportunity to view a rare species while supporting the City’s commitment to conservation, education and protecting biodiversity.”
The donation also highlights the relationship between the City of Regina and City of Edmonton and their shared commitment to protecting and preserving plant species for future generations.
The Wollemi Pine was known only through the fossil record until it was rediscovered in Australia in 1994. Fewer than 100 of these trees are known to exist in the wild today and the species is classified as Critically Endangered.
The tree will be cared for and displayed at the Regina Floral Conservatory, where residents and visitors can see it and learn more about its unique history and conservation.
