Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I receiving reminders to switch to a different notification service?
Text message reminders will be discontinued as of July 7, 2022. Download the Regina Waste app or sign up for email reminders.

Why is text message service being discontinued?
On April 1, 2022, the telecommunications industry increased text messaging costs. As a cost-saving measure, we transitioned to a mobile app that offers a very similar, if not better, experience for receiving reminders. We believe that the push notification will provide a better experience for residents!

How will this change the way I get reminders?
Instead of your reminder being sent to you as a text, you’ll receive a push notification the night before your collection day at 6 p.m. If you’d like to change that, you can click on the “more options” button and hit “notifications” to adjust the time you receive your reminder.

What’s the difference between a text and a push notification?
Push notifications and text reminders are very similar but have some key differences. Push notifications are sent directly from the mobile app, whereas a text message relies on a third-party telecom provider for distribution.

What other services does the app provide?
The Regina Waste app offers other waste and recycling resources the City of Regina has available (ex: the waste wizard).

I don’t have a smartphone - what can I do?
Alternative options are available. You can sign up for an email reminder, embed your recycling schedule directly into your online calendar (outlook, google or apple calendar), or opt-in for a phone call reminder.

Can I set multiple addresses using the app?
The Regina Waste app is intended to service a single household and there is currently not an option to set multiple addresses. Options available for collection reminders that do allow for multiple addresses include email, phone call, Outlook calendar, Google calendar and iCalendar notifications.

Curbside Waste Collection Funding Decision

On October 26, 2022 City Council approved a new approach to how residents pay for garbage, recycling and the upcoming food and yard waste collection. Starting on January 1, 2024, all three collection services will be funded by a user fee on the City of Regina Utility bill, meaning garbage will no longer be funded by property taxes. How this change may affect 2024 property tax rates will be determined by City Council through the Budget deliberation process in late 2022.

The new funding policy is designed to encourage waste reduction and waste diversion. Residents who waste less, pay less. The user fee will be based on the resident’s selected garbage cart size, 240L or 360L. The fee also includes the 360L recycling and 240L food and yard waste carts. Residents get increased transparency about the costs of waste services, as well as a choice of garbage service options.

The annual fee per household for pickup of all three waste collection carts - brown, blue and green - beginning in January 1, 2024, will be:

  • $16.12 per month if choosing a 240 L garbage cart ($193.45 per year)
  • $23.73 per month if choosing a 360 L garbage cart ($284.70 per year)

A Waste Utility Rebate of $54.75 per year will be available to eligible low-income households for seniors and persons with disabilities. Complete details on how to apply for the rebate will be made at a later date.
