Legacy Status Form

Businesses, institutions and organizations that have implemented a multi-stream waste management program for all three streams (recycling which collects more than paper, food and yard waste, and garbage) prior to March 31, 2023, can apply to have their bins grandfathered in, meaning they do not have to change their waste bins to meet the City’s mandatory colour scheme.

Hauling/Processing Information: Please specify the name of your hauler(s) and hauling frequencies for recycling, food and yard waste, and garbage. If your business utilizes food and yard waste processing equipment or technologies, such as countertop composters, please specify your plan for the finished compost product. Examples of finished compost usage include donating it to a community garden, employees taking it home and using it in garden beds, etc. Finished compost cannot be landfilled.

Approval Process

The applicants multi-stream waste management program for all three streams (recycling, food and yard waste, and garbage) must have been implemented prior to March 31, 2023 to qualify.
The City will contact the applicant by email to confirm receipt of the legacy application and ask any clarifying questions no later than 10 days after the proposal is submitted.
The City will review the legacy application to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria.
The City will notify applicants if their application for legacy status has been approved or denied no later than 10 business days after submission.
Application approval is at the discretion of the Director of Water, Waste & Environment.
